Indian National Congress
After leaderless revolt of 1857, Britishers need a delegation from Indians side to talk on problems. some active peoples met A. O. Hume, a retired British officer and they led foundation of one organization which became flag bearer in national moment under leadership of M. K. Gandhi, this is none other than Indian National Congress. Before INC many organization were founded to further the cause of self-rule, but most of them limited to objectives and restricted to specific region.
On 28th Dec. 1985 INC was founded at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay, where 72 delegates present marked. 1st meeting actually scheduled in Pune but due to Plague outbreak shifted to Mumbai. A. O. Hume was 1st general secretary and Womesh Chandra Banarjee was 1st elected president of INC. Second session of INC held at Culcatta and presided by Dadabhai Nauroji. Most of the member of INC were educated class of India mainly consisting lawyers, journalists, traders,industrialist, teachers and landlord. After founding of INC within four year membership count risen to 2000. INC made humble beginning, it gradually developed into a powerful but more inclusive organization.
Many organizations started even before INC to represent demands.
- In 1866 Dadabhai established East Indian Association in London.
- M. G. Ranade started Madras Mahajan Sabha.
- Bombay Presidency Association by Firozshah Mehta.
Other organizations were limited to some specific agenda they not spread across pan India. Initially INC tagged as safety valve for Indians discontent with Britishers. Initially INC politics referred as moderate politics. Many peoples tagged Congress annual conference as 'three day tamashas'. INC included Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajpatray, Gopal Gokhale and Mh. Ali Jinnah. In initial four five year of INC flooded with young angry mens. These peoples in favor of adoption of Swaraj
as goal of INC. This new group came to called extremists in contrast of previous one. This new group had wider social base and do not believe in British rule. They are inspired from own history and culture, believe in masses and sacrifice. This extremist tendency highly inspired from writings of Bankim Chandra.
1915: M. K. Gandhi arrived India. Next one year he was travel throughout India.
Within 4-5 years M. K. Gandhi became respected member of INC. Sudden death of Mr. Bal Gangadhar Tilak creates huge gap in INC. Lack of leadership in main stream INC Creates opportunity for M. K. Gandhi. Mr. Gandhi takeover INC and elected as president of INC in 1921. he was came with huge reforms in INC. Firstly he took INC to ground level and increase reach of among masses. He also reduce INC membership fee amount. During this Gandhi became a guiding star of Indian politics. Gandhi introduce many concepts like Satyagarh, vidhayak kaam between two struggles.This art of Gandhi supported by many like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Pandit Jawaharlal Neharu, Dr, Rajendra Prasad, Khan Mohammad Abbas Khan, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan. INC attempts at eradicating Caste Differences, untouchability, poverty and religious and ethenic divisions.
